Hit TV series Meteor Garden has made a comeback this 2018 after a successful and highly popular run 17 years ago, in 2001. Set in the city of Shanghai, the series reboot centers around the story of an ordinary girl, Dong Shancai who enters a prestigious university where she later encounters the well-known F4, an exclusive circle of four boys celebrated in school for their good looks and wealthy background. Basketball is the most-loved sport in the Philippines. For Filipinos, the ball game is more than just a pastime – it is training ground for discipline and sportsmanship, as well as for building friendships and camaraderie.

Making use of basketball as a means to inspire and teach life lessons to underprivileged youth, 35-year-old Ruben Lanot II, a tireless and dedicated basketball coach, was recently honored as the Mang Inasal’s 2018 Gawad Pilipinoy awardee.

The leading Pinoy chicken inasal brand’s very own recognition program for the country’s modern-day heroes, Gawad Pilipinoy cites outstanding individuals who represent galing ng Pinoy by fulfilling a passion or vocation that uplifts the lives of the less fortunate.

Coach Ruben started his love affair with the game at a very young age of six. He grew a deep liking for the sport while watching Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games. He became a varsity player in his senior year at the University of Sto. Tomas, and after graduation, eventually found coaching basketball as his calling.
His decision to quit his day job as an office employee in favor of coaching was further strengthened when he was commissioned to join the Junior NBA program as coach, where he was able to meet and coach talented young players from different provinces. It was there that he thought that these raw talents, when given the right training, equipment, and the opportunity to play, would become even better players.

Founder of Hoops Dreams, Coach Ruben holds basketball training sessions at the Taguig Tenement, where the young players are not only coached on the game, but also on life lessons that will help them achieve their dreams.

“I was able to relate to those aspiring young players since I myself didn’t come from an affluent family. When I was just starting to play, I didn’t have access to scientific basketball. That’s why I want these kids to experience what I didn’t get to enjoy before. Wala ako noong coach na masasabi kong naghulma sa akin nung bata ako about basketball (I didn’t have a coach whom I can say molded me as a young kid trying to play basketball),” Coach Ruben said.
These experiences inspired him to start his “Hoop Dreams” advocacy program, which aims to help those youth who aspire of becoming basketball players by giving them the skills, the drills, the right values, and even the jerseys and the shoes they need for the game. For the program, Coach Ruben partners with different orphanages, associations and organizations, which are looking for ways to give indigent youth better opportunities.

Coach Ruben holds basketball training sessions at the Taguig Tenement, where the young players are coached on the game, but also on life lessons that will help them achieve their dreams. As far as Coach Ruben is concerned, he exerts the same amount of sacrifice and effort to train the kids from the tenement as well as those children attending the private school where Ruben also coaches.

“Through basketball, I am able to give the youth, especially the underprivileged ones, a new reason to dream and hope that they can be good at something. That’s the best thing about pursuing my passion in basketball – I am able to fulfill the purpose behind that passion – that is, to be able to help others. Kaya’t hanggang may batang gustong matuto, nandito lang si Coach Ruben para sa kanila (As long as there are kids who want to learn, Coach Ruben is just here for them),” he said.

With Coach Ruben’s selfless use of his skills and passion to help the Pinoy youth through basketball, he is definitely a deserving recipient of the 2018 Gawad Pilipinoy award. Pepe Herrera became a household name because of his character as Benny in the ABS-CBN prime time show FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, in which he played the sidekick of Cardo (Coco Martin) for a time. And then he exited the show for personal reasons.

Admittedly, Pepe admits that the teleserye has been his biggest break in mainstream showbiz. But even before Ang Probinsyano, this singer-actor has already proven his mettle as an artist.

He already has an acting award and has secured a title role in a much-applauded musical, which has had couple of reruns for continued clamor, Rak of Aegis. In 2016, he was awarded the Best Actor trophy for his portrayal in the movie Sakaling Hindi Makarating.
Born Jose Nicolas Emmanuel Herrera, Pepe comes from a typical middle class family. “Yung mother ko teacher, yung father ko government employee. Ipinanganak ako sa Caloocan pero we stayed most of my life sa Quezon City,” the actor relates. He attained a Bachelor of Music in Voice from the Conservatory of Music in University of Santo Tomas and was a member of the campus’s well-known choral group, Coro Tomasino. He graduated in 2011.

His love for music has always been in his blood, he says. “Nagsimula ang hilig ko sa school, e. Where I studied, PWU JASMS, maraming ino-offer na extracurricular activities, yung isa don yung music club. Napasali ako sa ganong clubs, tapos nagustuhan ko, tapos yun, tuloy-tuloy na.”

While his college course isn’t the kind that would land him an office job, his parents, especially his mom, encouraged him to pursue it because it is what he loves. “Yung mother ko in-encourage pa niya ako na music ang kunin. I almost entered Fine Arts sa UST, e, nung time na yon ang feeling ko ang maraming pera is advertising.

“Pero sabi ng nanay ko, napansin niya sa akin mas mahilig akong kumanta at mag-perform bakit hindi daw ako mag-music. “Hindi ko makakalimutan ang sinabi niya, kung saan ka magaling at saan ka masaya, yun ang piliin mo, kusang darating ang pera. ”After graduation, he immediately grabbed the opportunity to work as a waiter in a cruise ship. And to satisfy his desire to perform in front of the audience, he worked as a singer at night. And while working as a singer at the ship was just his sideline, it was then that he truly realized his passion: the perform and please a crowd. “Do’n ko na-realize na gusto kong mag-perform as a singer for a living,” he related in an interview. His work on the cruise ship lasted for 10 months.

After that, he returned home and followed his passion, which is performing and teaching kids. “From being a waiter, kusa na lang akong bumalik sa pagiging performer hanggang naging full time uli performer. Nag-seaman ako pagbalik ditto kumakanta-kanta pa rin pero full time job ko teacher music teacher tapos eventually, naging full-time actor performer ako. ”He got a support role in the Enrique Gil-Liza Soberano prime time hit series Forevermore in 2014, and the rest, as they say, is history.

He says, he never imagined that he would be popular, thanks to his role as Benny in Ang Probinsyano. Admittedly, he says he had to adjust because of the fame that he acquired. “Honestly, nung una, it was a bit overwhelming for me kasi medyo naturally relaxed ako na tao. So I love my privacy, doing things my own way, so yung restriction na kaakibat ng pagiging aktor, it was overwhelming for me. Siguro after ilang years and much-needed rest, ngayon masasabi ko na manageable na siya. Somehow I was able to manage yung stress.”

Meantime, Pepe will finally be the lead of an upcoming movie, The Hopeful Romantic. He plays Jess, a 33 year old Valet Parking Attendant at The Manila Hotel, an honest man and most of all, a virgin. He promised himself that he will only give himself when he already found his true love.

SM Marikina is quite far from our place, but its an interesting place to visit once in a while. My boys' first time at SM Marikina and they really enjoyed it, most especially the colorful Cologram. It shows in their faces the joy while they run around the venue. Happy faces are on their face all throughout our stay.

There are too many good news that Ms Ai Ai Delas are grateful to share to all her supporters and to her family. Too many blessings that she wants to thank God for giving her a chance to experience everything that is now happening in her life.
And for that she won a Best Actress in the Cinemalaya 2018 for the movie "School Service" directed by no less than Louie Ignacio. She is so thankful for that award and very emotional when she confirmed that she won the Best Actress award.

Another good news that Ms Ai Ai wants to share is the rebranding of their resto, from Ai Sarap to Chang Ai Express. One of the reason of rebranding is the location, most of their patron got confused with the address.

She explains also the meaning of the new name which is the Chang Ai Express: Chang means longevity and she wants her name to be there, always. There are some of the menu from Ai Sarap still offers by Chang Ai Express, and added new food/meals to offers. They also now offers combo meals to fit on the budget because they want their foods very affordable.
 
 




One of their dishes that I tried is their combo meal (fried chicken with siomai). The chicken is so big that is intended to make your stomach full plus the siomai on the side. Love their Mango Sago Medley Dessert, it is perfect for the dish that I ate.

Ms. Ai Ai is also busy with her upcoming movie with Ex Batallion under Viva Films plus her show at Sunday Pinasay and The Clash at GMA Network.
