Bayad, the pioneer brand in the outsourced payment collection system, has partnered with Go VIP Center, a leading business solutions and financial services provider, to enable customers with more convenient ways to pay their bills.

Under the partnership, more than 1,000 Go VIP payment centers can now accept bills payments for different utilities and government contributions including the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), PLDT, and Metro Manila Development Authority.

The new feature is on top of the usual money transfer, remittance, airtime loading, delivery, and microinsurance services offered in Go VIP payment centers.

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced a P0.7213 per kilowatt hour (kWh) decrease in power rates this July. This reduction is equivalent to P144 in total savings for a typical household consuming 200 kWh. Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga explained that the rate reduction was triggered mainly by the lower generation charge due to lower costs from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market, Power Supply Agreements, and Independent Power Producers.

The heat is on! Yes, because it's summer already and we know when summer strikes, but, for now I believe we're experiencing El Niño. So, it means hotter weather is everywhere and we don't have much choice or rather places to cool down.The only means we can lessen the heat is with the use of our appliances like air conditioning units, electric fans, and refrigerators. Of course this comes with depletion of our finances. Higher electric bills!

Fortunately, I was invited to an exclusive tour of the Meralco Power Lab, where we learned many ways to conserve energy. The Meralco Power Lab is a two-level, multipurpose facility that aims to provide customers with power-related information, such as testing and validation, comparisons of electricity-related technologies and practices. We learned that there are still many ways to reduce the amount paid for electric bills. Here are some highlights of the tour and tips for energy efficiency.

The Air Conditioner or AC is the most frequently used appliance during summer, particularly in the Philippines, where it is used all day long rather than just at night for a good night's sleep.

Here are some tips on using Aircon:

1. Choose the appropriate size of air conditioner for your room.

2. Make sure to check for air leaks as they can prolong the time it takes to cool down the room temperature.

3. To speed up the cooling process, you can use an electric fan, but ensure that the air conditioner is positioned directly facing the fan.  

4. Utilize the timer feature automatically turn off the air conditioner when the temperature becomes too cold, even while you're sleeping.

5. Regularly clean air conditioner to prevent it from accumulating dust, which can slow down the air ventilation and cooling process.

 

The Refrigerator is a major contributor to a household's energy consumption. It runs continuously, consuming electricity to maintain a cool temperature to preserve food and beverages.  

Below are some tips for utilizing your refrigerator efficiently.

1. Choose a refrigerator that suits the size of your home and the number of people living in it.

2. Ensure that there are no air leaks by checking if the door is properly sealed after closing it, to prevent wasting the cool temperature inside the refrigerator.

3. It is advisable to wait for warm food to cool down before placing it inside the refrigerator.

4. Refrain from putting too much stuff inside your refrigerator as it can obstruct air vents, resulting in a slower cooling process.

Use a DC Fan - DC stands for Direct Current Fan. A DC fan utilizes a transformer to convert the energy into direct current, which is a one-way current, thereby reducing the amount of power consumed.

Switching to LED Lights and installing motion sensor lights can significantly reduce your electricity bill.

Induction Cookers are a cost-effective and user-friendly alternative to gasul stoves. They are also safer, particularly for people with busy lifestyles.

Solar Panels are an effective solution for saving energy, particularly in remote areas with limited access to electricity. For greater savings, consider installing solar panels on your roof.

During the tour, we discovered the Meralco Appliance Calculator which enables tracking of the energy consumption of appliances on an hourly, daily, weekly, and a monthly basis. We will know how much energy our appliances consume, and we can use them properly to prevent an increase in our bills. We can also adjust the usage of our appliances according to our budget. 

They also presented to us their electric vehicles as part of Meralco's Green Mobility Program, aimed at lessening greenhouse gas emissions and promoting the country's shift to electrified transportation. The program intensifies endeavors towards sustainable modes of transportation, and more electric vehicles will soon be accessible as additional electric charging stations are continuously being established across the metro.

Meraco's subsidiary, eSakay, Inc. provides comprehensive EV and charging infrastructure solutions to institutional clients and the public. The company has charging stations within its compound that can accommodate all of its EVs.

 

According to them, EVs are supported by the  government, and many people over the country are already using them. EVs also provide significant help in reducing pollution caused by conventional vehicles.

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) committed anew its support for the government’s transportation infrastructure development efforts crucial to the country’s pandemic recovery and economic growth.  

In a meeting with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Meralco President and CEO Atty. Ray C. Espinosa affirmed the power distributor’s assistance through continuing pole relocation and energization activities in support of the agency’s ongoing and planned transportation projects geared towards greatly benefiting the public.   

“As the country’s largest power distribution utility, Meralco is cognizant of the importance of stable and reliable electric service in the timely completion and effective operations of DOTr’s infrastructure projects. The government can always count on Meralco’s continued and full support for these initiatives which will help spur the Philippines’ post-pandemic recovery and renewed drive towards economic progress,” Atty. Espinosa said.

  Among the new transportation projects requiring substantial power supply are the LRT-1 Cavite Extension Packages 2 and 3, North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) Extension from Calamba to Batangas; MRT-4; LRT-2 East Cogeo Extension; LRT-2 West Extension; LRT-6 Cavite Line A; MRT-7 Extension Project; EDSA Greenways; EDSA Bus Rapid Transit-Busway Concourse; Pasig River Expressway; Southern Access Link Expressway; and Northern Access Link.

  Meralco is also currently undertaking a pole relocation project in support of the ongoing construction of NAIAxEDSA Tramo Connecting Ramp and Skyway Stage 4.

  In May 2019, Meralco and DOTr signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) underscoring the parties’ close coordination for the timely completion of Common Station, LRT-1 Cavite Extension, MRT-7, Metro Manila Subway, PNR South Long Haul (from Manila to Sorsogon), and the three phases of North-South Commuter Railway System, namely PNR North 1 (from Tutuban to Malolos, Bulacan), PNR North 2 (from Malolos to Clark, Pampanga), and PNR South Commuter (from Solis to Calamba, Laguna).  

Meralco and DOTr are likewise working together to ensure the timely grant of necessary permits and rights-ofway (ROW), clearances, access and authority for properties within their jurisdiction, in order for Meralco to fully implement the related relocation projects and to continuously operate its electrical facilities.  

Since 2020, Meralco has relocated more than 2,500 poles and has energized 21 facilities to support the government’s infrastructure projects.  

“We are grateful to Meralco for their renewed commitment to support our projects. Long before these projects become operational, Meralco has been and remains a loyal partner in supplying power critical for these projects to prosper,” DOTr Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said.  

 

As a working Mom, I juggle many roles in our family. I make sure to give my best effort to my family even though I'm working. It's not good to serve two masters at the same time but I'm serving my family and at the same time the company I'm working with.

At present, electricity plays a huge role in our daily lives. We use electricity in almost everything that we do. It is the power that runs our machines and equipment. I remember my childhood days when brown-out and black-out, were the usual thing that happens in our community. It's hard, especially when you're studying for the school exam on the following day.

It was a struggle before, fortunately, brown-outs are rare. I think it only happens when there's a situation that needs to be fixed. Anyway, I'm here to share what transpired during our lunch date with some of the executives of Meralco and One Meralco Foundation.

It was a lunch date with the Vice President for Corporate Communication of Meralco, Mr. Joe Zaldarriaga, and Mr. Jeffrey Tarayao, the President of One Meralco Foundation. When I saw Mr. Zaldarriaga, I said to myself that he looks familiar. Then when he started talking.... ooohhh that was him. The person that we usually see on television in Meralco commercials, is the one that gives updates about our bill consumption for the period. That's Tito Joe. 

Anyway, we met with them because they have some updates to share about Meralco and One Meralco Foundation.

Mr. Zaldarriaga shares that Meralco considering the opportunities of the current times which is the use of social media, thus they are adapting to reach more customers. We all know that nowadays, social media is a thing for everyone.

One Meralco Foundation of Meralco is run by one of its executives, Mr. Jeffrey Tarayao, the President. The goal of the foundation is to provide sustainable energy source to hard-to-reach schools and communities in remote areas. During our interview, Mr. Tarayao shared their lighting project stories that occupies most of their time, going to the community, giving the currently available energy source, which is the solar-powered panels, and other possible help they can extend.

One Meralco Foundation, under the leadership of Mr. Tarayao, seeks out these electricity-deprived communities to bring the hope of light. Mr. Tarayao explained also during the interview that they are thankful to their network of partners who knows about the project. With this, people, agencies, and organizations share information with One Meralco Foundation for communities in need of the lighting project and with this they review and pick which one does need the lighting project the most. 

Right now, One Meralco Foundation is busy distributing solar-powered lamps. They have given a figure of around 3,000 solar lamps to fisherfolks and forest rangers. The foundation also have scholarships for the engineers to be and also the nurse and doctors to be.

Two years into the coronavirus outbreak, there is no denying that the world has changed. At the onset of the pandemic in 2020, governments all around the world scrambled to find ways to contain the pandemic.

The virus also unleashed a deadly blow to the global economy, disrupting supply chains and forcing businesses to halt operations.

The power industry was not spared from the effects of the pandemic. Industry players had to think quickly and strategically about how to adapt to the new normal.

Power distribution utilities like the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) had to ensure that safeguards are in place so that operations regain stability at the soonest possible time as it put even more important to the health and safety of its customers and employees.

The current situation also underscored the importance of continuous, reliable, sufficient, and cost-competitive electricity supply that is necessary to carry out the efforts to fight COVID-19, to help businesses recover, and to sustain the needs of the people who are working from home.

Power service in 2020 most stable in NCR—study

As the Philippines continues to thread the challenges and impacts of the pandemic, Meralco lives up to its commitment to deliver impressive electricity service to its customers.

Data from the Department of Energy (DoE) and Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) showed that Meralco has among the lowest rates in the Philippines, according to energy think tank Energy Intel Philippines.

National Capital Region (NCR), which is served solely by Meralco, has the fourth-lowest generation charge at P4.38 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2020.

Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (CALABARZON), portions of which are also served by Meralco, registered the third lowest generation charge of P4.27 per kWh in the same year.

The lowest generation charges in 2020 were recorded in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Eastern Visayas which were at P3.91 per kWh and P4.13 per kWh, respectively.

Even with one of the lowest rates, Meralco fulfills its mandate to deliver efficient and reliable electric service.

Energy Intel Philippines also stated that Meralco tops other regions in terms of the frequency and duration of its power interruptions – which are both indicators of service stability and reliability.

Meralco’s system average interruption frequency index (SAIFI), a metric that shows how often customers experience a sustained power interruption that lasts more than five minutes, was the lowest in the Philippines at 1.501 times in 2020, a 15 percent improvement compared to the 1.769 times in 2019.

Meanwhile, the distributor’s system average interruption duration index (SAIDI), the average duration of interruptions per consumer, improved to only 163 minutes in 2020 from the 188.37 minutes a year prior.

Meralco aims to further lower its SAIFI to only one time and SAIDI to 100 minutes. In fact, in its latest performance report, the company’s SAIFI and SAIDI even went further down to only 1.154 times and only 109 minutes, respectively, as of end-September.

As a result of its system loss management initiatives, Meralco’s system loss as of end-September improved to 5.61 percent from 6.18 percent in the same period in 2020 – and well below the ERC’s 6.5 percent cap.

Balancing service with compassion

Cognizant of the challenges being faced by its customers amidst the pandemic, Meralco deferred disconnection activities as early as March 2020. The suspension remained in areas that were under strict quarantine classifications until October 2021.

Customers who are also encountering difficulty in settling their dues have been given the option to avail of installment plans of four to six months to give them more time to pay their electricity bills.

In addition, Meralco introduced innovations to make it even easier and safer for customers to reach out by offering virtual customer assistant (VCA) services and online customer appointment (OCA) services.

The VCA allows customers to speak to Meralco representatives working from home, while OCA provides scheduled visits at business centers if they still feel the need to do so.

Meralco also worked with Bayad Center to have VCAs available at select Bayad Centers, with more VCAs continuously being rolled out.

Meralco President and CEO Atty. Ray C. Espinosa said: “Over the past months, Meralco had been called to provide continued quality service under unprecedented situations. We have seen and heard firsthand the plight of our customers who have been economically challenged by the pandemic, and we took it upon ourselves to respond with the kind of service they need now – consistent and reliable, but most of all, driven by humanity and compassion.”

COVID-19 facilities highly prioritized

To support the government’s fight against the pandemic, Meralco also works to energize key facilities, including hospitals and vaccination centers.

Through the Meralco COVID-19 Vaccine Roll-out Task Force, Meralco is closely monitoring in real-time all circuits serving these vital facilities, which allows the distributor to respond faster to any unforeseen outage.

To date, over 140 COVID-19 facilities have already been energized by the distribution giant and this includes government offices, hospitals, testing laboratories, quarantine and vaccination centers, and vaccine storage facilities.

Among these facilities are the Mega Field Hospital at the Rizal Park; the Tondo Health Center that will be used as a vaccination center; We Heal As One Treatment Center in Pasay City; the Pharmaserv Vaccine Storage Facility and the COVID-19 Vaccination Facility in Marikina; the RT-PCR Testing Center in Makati City; the COVID-19 Treatment Facility in Malabon City; and the Solaire- PAGCOR Mega Quarantine Facility in Paranaque City.

The list of these vital COVID-19 facilities, especially the vaccination centers, is expected to expand as the government ramps up the inoculation for the younger population. The company said it is committed to continuing to prioritize the energization of these COVID-19 vital institutions until the COVID-19 is eventually contained.

Infrastructure development and a more resilient distribution network

As the country moves towards post-pandemic recovery efforts, Meralco also supports infrastructure development and ensures that network facilities are in place for timely construction of some major transportation projects, including the EDSA Common Station, LRT-1 Cavite Extension, MRT-7, NLEX-SLEX Connector Road, and Skyway Stage 2.

The company as of end-September relocated a total of 1,170 electric poles to support the government’s Build Build Build projects, while some 933 electric poles have been retired for the road widening projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The company also continued to expand and upgrade facilities to build a more resilient distribution network. Major capital projects completed in the first nine months of 2021 include the expansion of the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) substation and San Mateo substation.

Just recently, Meralco also announced that it was transforming a 2.1-hectare property in Paco, Manila into a sustainable Meralco facility for a period of 10 years.

A highly urbanized city with growing electricity needs, Taguig recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) which aims to spur economic progress through joint initiatives between the country’s largest electric distribution utility and local government units (LGUs).

“With the signing of the EPP-MOU, we at Meralco have further committed to remain steadfast in our support of Taguig City’s programs, which are all in line with delivering excellent service to its constituents,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Head, Customer Retail Services and Corporate Communications Alfredo S. Panlilio said.

At the signing ceremony, Panlilio noted that, to date, Meralco has energized numerous projects with the LGU including the Taguig-Pateros hospital, the Taguig Lakefront community park, 10 day care centers, 12 multi-purpose halls, nine covered courts, over 40 streetlights, and more than 1,000 households through the RAISE project led by One Meralco Foundation.

For her part, Mayor Lani Cayetano affirmed that Meralco has long been helping the city government, saying that the distribution utility’s “Ang Liwanag ng Bukas” slogan serves as a clear representation of how the power utility literally and figuratively gives light to every home, street and community.

“On behalf of the City of Taguig, we thank Meralco for all the help and support. I am truly confident that this new partnership will lead to a better, closer collaboration between Taguig and Meralco, and consequently boost our capability to continuously respond to the fast-changing needs of our citizens,” she said.

The Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) announced a decrease of Php 0.1252 per kilowatt hour (kWh) in power rates this June for its residential customers. Households consuming 200 kWh will gain savings of Php 25 in their electricity bills. Brought about by lower generation charges and most other cost components, Meralco Public Information Office Head Joe Zaldarriaga (in photo) explained that this was the second month of consecutive rate reductions. The reduction would have even been lower if not for a higher Feed-in Tariff Allowance (FiT-All) rate of PhP 0.0733/kWh. FiT-All is a pass-through charge meant to incentivize renewable energy (RE) developers, such as those operating wind, solar, biomass and run-of-river hydropower facilities. Despite the drop in electricity rates, Meralco still encourages its customers to practice energy efficiency to manage their consumption – like unplugging appliances when not in use to avoid “phantom load,” turning the aircon at 25°C mid-setting to maximize efficiency, using a power board or strip to help manage appliance use, making the most of natural light during daytime, and keeping appliances well-maintained.

The call to conserve water and energy has never been more imperative than today. With the effects of global warming and climate change now more pronounced than ever before, there is a need to be mindful of the way we spend our resources. This not only extends to the way we use our water resources but also the way we consume electricity.

Be wise energy users.

As part of Beko’s green initiatives, Beko Philippines encourages Filipinos to become wise energy users by contemplating on their laundry routine. Beko understands that doing the laundry also requires a significant amount of electricity.

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), the household sector is the second major user of electricity. In fact, laundry accounts 29 percent of other household electricity usage based on the latest available Household Energy Consumption Survey (HECS) by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

“Beko believes that we must take into account how much energy is consumed even on our laundry. As we envision a greener laundry routine, the company has been initiating outstanding contributions toward the protection of the environment through energy efficiency and innovating eco-friendly washing machines,” said Dyeun Zapanta, Beko Philippines Sales and Marketing Head.

Beko suggests that households follow regular laundry days and avoid running the washing machine for only a few pieces of items.

Beko Philippines underlines that by taking steps to reduce energy consumption, one could contribute to a cleaner and greener world. For instance, investing on energy-efficient washers and dryers significantly cuts your electric bills.

Recently, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) tested the energy efficiency of certain Beko washing machines in line with its Orange Tags campaign. The Meralco Orange Tags are easy-to-understand labels that indicate estimated energy consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and estimated cost per hour to inform consumers on how much electricity a household product consumes.

Meralco tested some Beko’s washing machines in three trials. Items tested ranged from front loaders, top loaders and dryers in different sizes and capacities. The said survey revealed that the washing machines are all energy efficient. The results of the test are as follows:

Meralco estimated that the average cost per wash of Beko’s three top-loads amounts to only a peso per hour of washing cycle.

Specifically, for a 7-kg capacity washing machine, every wash amounts to only PhP0.96 per hour of washing with 0.09 energy consumption and 94 watts for power usage.

Meanwhile, for 9-kg capacity top load, Meralco calculated that the cost per wash cycle amounts to PhP1.14 for almost an hour of washing with 0.11 energy consumption and 97 watts. On the other hand, for 12kg top load, they assessed that the cost per wash amounts to PhP1.37 again for almost an hour with 0.13 energy consumption and 109 watts.

For a 7-kg and 9-kg capacity, the estimated cost per wash both costs 9 pesos per almost four hours of washing with 0.88 and 0.84 energy consumption, respectively.

On the other hand, for 10.5-kg frontload, they measured that every wash costs 15 pesos for a full load, full cycle with duration of nearly four hours with 1.47 energy consumption and 380 watts for power usage.

For Beko’s 7-kg dryer, the estimated cost per drying cycle amounts to six pesos per half an hour with 0.63 energy consumption and 1,217 watts.
