I am grateful that last week I was able to attend the media launch of Tiktok Digital Literacy Hub: A Guide to Online Safety. There are too many learnings and realizations as I listened to all the panel on the stage.

TikTok, the leading short-form video platform, continued its fight against harmful misinformation with a livestream titled TikTok Digital Literacy Hub: A Guide to Online Safety

During the media launch, streamed via TikTok Live, TikTok reiterated its continued commitment to help users navigate the digital environment safely through its in-app Digital Literacy Hub, its portal containing educational information on mental well-being, cyber wellness, minor safety, potentially dangerous online challenges, and other digital literacy topics.

Panelists included TikTok Head of Public Policy, the Philippines, Mr. Kristoffer Rada; TikTok Content Creator, Ms. Mona Magno-Veluz (Mighty Magulang); Chief of Party, YouthLed, Ms. Ching Jorge; Internews Senior Program Officer, Mr. Gian Libot. Celebrity Antoinette Taus hosted the event.

Anchored by hashtag #thinkb4youdo, the hub promotes safe online behavior and encourages everyone to think twice before doing anything on the Internet or before taking on dangerous challenges.

"We wanted to reiterate TikTok's commitment to digital literacy not just in the Philippines, but also across South East Asia. We invited our partners today because we realized that this problem cannot be solved by one sector alone. It really needs a holistic approach, a multi-pronged approach for us to get to a solution. We all have the power within ourselves to be the initial gatekeepers of what could be fake news. We are embarking on that first step of this journey towards critical thinking and digital literacy," said Kristoffer Rada, TikTok Head of Policy, the Philippines.

"In YouthLed, we integrate digital literacy with our civic education program. We consider digital literacy as an important 21st century education skill. Together with democratic values, these can help the youth navigate online democratic spaces and participate effectively," said Ching Jorge, Chief of Party, Youth Leadership for Democracy (YouthLed).

TikTok’s initiative in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia also hosts digital literacy tips that can help users make smart choices. The tips come in the form of videos, quizzes, and scenario-based learning content that users can easily relate to.

No to misinformation

Users were also encouraged to be critical about information they read on social media and on the Internet. TikTok’s Digital Literacy Hub provides tools that will help users to identify and report inappropriate materials, platforms that spread false information and fake news.

"A huge portion of digital literacy has been focused on how to use stuff, how to be able to navigate a specific platform - and that's well and good. But the missing ingredient there is to introduce some critical thinking within consumption. Because at the end of the day, if you are exposed to false information, the best person to be able to check that information is going to be you, the consumer," said Gian Libot, Senior Program Officer, Internews.

"On the platform itself, we are seeing a lot NGOs (non-government organizations), a lot of good brands, harnessing the power of short-form videos. There are good causes that are going on this platform. #EduWOW of TikTok Philippines has two billion views on its educational content. So it is a wrong assumption that everything on TikTok is not correct. In fact, brands and organizations like these have understood and given importance to the power of short form video," said TikTok Content Creator Mona Magno-Veluz (Mighty Magulang).

TikTok’s Community Guidelines are designed to help combat medical misinformation on the platform by prohibiting users from posting false or misleading content, particularly in relation to COVID-19. This includes misinformation regarding vaccines, anti-vaccine disinformation, and paid advertising that promotes against vaccination. The TikTok platform also houses a dedicated Check The FAQs banner that sits on the discover page, which connects users to credible Covid-19 information as well as creative videos, not only from our creators but also from healthcare professionals.

Call-to-action type content related to COVID-19 vaccines are only accepted on a case-to-case basis, provided that they are in the interest of public health and safety. Through specially trained teams, false or misleading content, along with accounts that spread misinformation, are identified and removed from TikTok. Community members are also encouraged to report misinformation and any content that violates TikTok's Community Guidelines. With the help of industry-leading threat detection platforms, suspicious networks and activities are also identified and flagged within the app as well. Any Covid-19 content shared on TikTok is carefully screened for accuracy, with the help of fact-checking partners, which includes Agence France-Presse (AFP). The DOH itself reviews all the vaccination-related videos shared on TikTok's Covid-19 mainpage, and approves the ones that contain the right information about the vaccines.

Only content that contains verified facts are widely distributed into users' For You feeds, helping minimize the potential spread of false information within the app. Anti-vaccine and Covid-19 misinformation will not be recommended to users and will carry a banner that warns viewers of misinformation. TikTok removes false content, and redirects searches related to COVID-19 or vaccine disinformation to the app's Community Guidelines. Also, anti-vaccine hashtags are not completed in search. TikTok users who explore coronavirus-associated hashtags will see an in-app notice, which provides direct access to credible sources, including the World Health Organization (WHO) website, as well as local public health agencies.

TikTok, the leading destination for short-form mobile videos, today announced that BTS' 'Life Goes On' which recently topped the Billboard 'Hot 100', hit a milestone on TikTok, setting a record of 930 M hashtag views in just 15 days.

Held from November 21 to December 5, the #LifeGoesOn challenge was a call for users all over the word to interpret and positively express how 'Life Goes On' in their own creative ways. The videos created with #LifeGoesOn had more than 463,276 in 15 days of the campaign.

BTS also participated in the challenge and connected with their fans by releasing TikTok videos of their own: Jin goes through a flipbook, RM and V does maple leaf art, Jimin decorates a glass bottle, j-hope takes Polaroid pictures and JungKook practices calligraphy. In response, the group's fans, ARMY, uploaded videos of themselves dancing and singing along to the new song, as well as moments in their daily lives with friends and family.

Dance challenges on TikTok has proven once again that it has the power to go viral--- or fight a virus in this case. Users of the platform in Vietnam are spreading awareness on the prevention of COVID-19 with the hashtag challenges #handwashingmove and #ghencovychallenge. As of writing, the challenge already has 18.1M views and 2.4M views respectively.

One of Vietnam’s popular dancers, Quang Dang, choreographed the #handwashingmove

with six handwashing moves based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of diseases.

The dance easily gained popularity with the help of the catchy song “Ghen Co Vy” (a song under communication project by Vietnam’s Ministry of Health) which literally translated as “Jealous Coronavirus”. The virus will surely be jealous as the dance even earned the approval of host and comedian John Oliver on his show Last Week Tonight.

"It absolutely slaps! That's a genuine club-banger right there!,” commented Oliver.

#handwashingmove and #ghencovychallenge mark another #TikTokforGood effort to spread useful and correct information to the community. Not only an act to raise awareness about healthcare habits, the challenges also deliver TikTok’s optimistic spirit in the fight against COVID-19 epidemic. The platform will be present as a worldwide trustworthy, helpful yet joyful information channel for the public during this serious period.

“Simple knowledge of disease prevention such as keeping warm, wearing medical masks or washing hands properly are basic practices that everyone needs to acquire.
