Rotary Club of Paranaque Lakan-Bini joins 18-day campaign to end violence against women and children through “Boses” Nov. 24 movie screening

In support of these advocacies, the Rotary Club of Parañaque Lakan-Bini (Rotary International District 3830) and Erasto Films are holding a screening of Boses, an acclaimed film about the friendship of an abused boy and a grieving violinist who find hope in the transformative power of music. The event is on November 24, 2018, Saturday, at 9 am at SM Bicutan.
Boses, starring young violin prodigy Julian Duque and celebrated international concert violinist Coke Bolipata, premiered at the 2008 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and continues to be screened locally and abroad. Among the highlights of its 10-year journey so far include winning Best Film at the 2008 Gawad Tanglaw and Golden Screen Awards, a theatrical run in 2013 wherein it became one of the most successful indies of that year, and its selection as opening film of the 2017 ASEAN Film Festival held in Geneva, Switzerland to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN.
For Ms. Isabelle Gonzalez, past president/ project proponent and chair of the Rotary Club of Parañaque’s campaign to end violence towards women and children, the film is very meaningful to their cause. “Our club, headed by our president Perlita Catap, purposely chose Boses because it tackles themes that are synonymous to our mission, namely, maternal and child care; and, peace and conflict resolution in families.”
In the film, Onyok, a seven-year old boy who has become mute due to an abusive father, is brought to a children’s shelter where he is given violin lessons by Ariel who is grieving over the loss of a loved one. Ariel and his sister (played by actress Cherry Pie Picache) shields Onyok from his father (played by Ricky Davao) who attempts to remove the boy from the shelter.
Thanks to the support from various concerned groups and individuals, Boses persists as an educational material to champion the rights of women and children. Various government agencies from the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, to the Philippine Commission on Women have endorsed this film. Among its other supporters include Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle and psychologists Dr. Margie Holmes and Dr. Honey Carandang.

As Lisa and Manolo look back in retrospect and they examine the decisions they made in their lives, they can’t help but ask what if....
The feature film stars multi-awarded veteran actors Gina Pareño and Eddie Garcia and is written by spoken word artist Juan Miguel Severo based from his one-act stage play for The Virgin Lab Fest.
Hintayan ng Langit is a co-production between Globe Studios and Project 8 Corner San Joaquin Projects, a film production company owned by top filmmakers Dan Villegas and Antoinette Jadaone. Being the usual expectator of SM malls centerpiece, me and my kids are always looking forward to see the different Christmas decorations of every SM malls. It was really great to see that SM City North EDSA have something different to look forward to by the kids. This will surely a different approach in capturing the kids and kids-at-heart.
This year's Christmas centerpiece is dubbed as Glitter Critter Christmas where characters from Planet Hapitu creates a fun and festive mood inside the mall lead by Cap, Boom, Chum, Lox, Oola and Lala, Puchik, Ching, Twinkle, Mick, Baloo, and Baba.
This Glitter Critters are SM City North EDSA's original creation that will make the whole yuletide season to great.
During the launch of SM City North EDSA's centerpiece, SM COO Steven Tan and SM Supermalls Senior VP for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin lead the lighting of the 39 foot modern Glitter Critter Play Christmas Tree. Another reinvention of the usual Christmas Tree.
Present during the launch were celebrities Aubrey Montero and Family, Princess Velasco and Family Camille Pratts and Family, Vanessa Matsunaga and Family, Dimples Romana and Family as well as other important guests that joined in the fun and had their photo taken with the Glitter Critter Character mascots. Modern twist to an icon

Artists for Rebisco
Palanca awardee visual artist Migs Villanueva noted how Rebisco has been part of her own life as a mother, a grandmother and even as an artist. “I wanted to depict the affection and the connection between family members like mother and son or siblings because that’s the nucleus of the society. Rebisco is a family thing,” she said.
For his part, Roel Obemio based his artwork on social narrative observations, inspired by his own experiences with Rebisco. He shared, “Kumakain ako ng Rebisco habang nagpipinta ako. ‘Yun ang mga ibinibigay namin sa mga kamag-anak namin sa Mindanao. Sa probinsya common na siya. Icon na kasi e. Lumaki ako sa ganun.(I eat Rebisco when I paint. And that’s also what we give to our relatives in Mindanao. It’s common in the province because it’s an icon. It’s been a part of my experience growing up.)”
Aris Bagtas, who paints Filipino folk art and culture, expressed excitement over the collaboration, which is a special collectible item. “I’m really proud kasi Filipino product ‘yun,” he added. Filipino Pop-Social Realism artist Joseph Bañez also noted the significance of the campaign. “’Yung makilala ka, madagdagan ng exposure at maging part ka ng isang icon na produkto dito sa Pilipinas, that’s the best part. (To be recognized, to gain more exposure and to be part of an iconic Filipino product, that’s the best part.)”
